Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights. Its impact ranges from immediate to long-term multiple physical, sexual and mental consequences for women and girls including death.

Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights.

It negatively affects women’s general well-being and prevents women from fully participating in society. Violence not only has negative consequences for women but also their families, the community and the country at large. It has tremendous costs from greater health care and legal expenses and losses in productivity, impacting national budgets and overall development. Without access to their basic human rights these women lack the ability to have control over their own bodies and ultimately, their future. They aren’t able to protect themselves from STIs, unplanned pregnancies or gender-based violence. At Women Health Channel Uganda, we know that while the women’s movement and the young women’s movement must continue to lead the movement for gender equality, we need to also engage boys and men to achieve gender equality.

Men and women who have not had opportunities to question gender roles, attitudes and beliefs cannot change them and women who are unaware of their rights cannot claim them. Once evidence accumulates and awareness grows, the potential for stopping all forms of violence does too. Our prosper together saving group platform provides a neutral self-mobilizing ground for men & women, boys &girls to reflect and dialogue on gender roles, attitudes and beliefs thus raising the impetus for combating intimate partner and gender-based violence, sexual violence, female genital mutilation, child marriage and child abuse.
